What does a General Manager do?
A general manager is typically the most senior position within a hotel, below owners and directors. A general manager will be responsible for overseeing the entire hotel operation, and for the overall profitability. A general manager must therefore have a range of experience across all hotel operations as well as a grasp on marketing and finance. Ultimately as a the most senior member of the team a general manager will want to have a strong leadership and management skills, ensuring their team can deliver high standards. Below is a list of some of the responsibilities of a general manager:
1. Operations - from front of desk to house keeping, a general manager will oversee the day to day operations of the hotel, ensuring standards are met.
2. Staff Management - motivate and lead their team to deliver high standards, as well as recruiting and training new members.
3. Finance & Strategic Management - review financial budgets and reports, ensuring the hotel remains profitable and has a long term strategy for growth.
4. Sales & Marketing - Once a strategy has been established it is the general managers responsibility to implement effective marketing campaigns to attract new customers and to retain existing clientele.
