What do Payroll Professionals do?

Payroll professionals play a critical role in maintaining an organisation's financial and operational stability. Here are some of the key responsibilities and tasks that payroll professionals typically handle:

  1. Staff Remuneration: calculating and processing staff salaries.   2. Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of employee data, including their personal information, tax information, and pay history, whilst adhering to current data protection legislation (GDPR).

  3. Using Various Payroll Software: A variety of software options are available to employers and payroll providers. A payroll professional should have a solid understanding of how payroll software works, and an ability to use different applications. A payroll professional may need to advise provides on software options.

  4. Reporting: a Payroll professional will be required to report payroll information to various stakeholders, including management, HR, HMRC, Pension providers and auditors. A payroll professional will make sure that these reports are timely and accurate.

  5. Payroll / Tax Year-End Procedures: providing P60s to current staff, and a year end submission to HMRC, as well restarting software databases for new year processing.

Accreditation

Payroll professionals can apply for membership with the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP). There are several membership levels to suit all professinals, from entry level (associate), to a chartered membership for experienced professionals. The Membership with the CIPP will guide a payroll professional through their payroll career offering qualifications and resources, as well as a community to offer support and advice.

Payroll professionals play a crucial role in maintaining the financial stability of an organization and ensuring that employees are compensated accurately and in compliance with the law. They must stay informed about changing regulations and technology to effectively manage payroll processes.
